Game, Set, Machine: A DIY Tennis Ball Machine by Eduardo M.
For his senior project, Eduardo M. created the Game Set Machine—a DIY tennis ball machine—driven by his lifelong passion for tennis. He stated, “I thought, why not do something that is going to relate to my biggest passion, which is tennis." Motivated by his deep connection to the sport and memories of collaborative DIY projects with his father, Eduardo embarked on this endeavor to blend his interests in tennis and engineering. His main objectives were to develop a functional machine and enhance his engineering skills, recognizing the potential for future projects.
The project involved extensive research to select appropriate materials and components, including motors and power supplies. Eduardo meticulously crafted physical and 3D models to visualize the machine's design before delving into the construction process. Challenges arose, such as sourcing specific materials within tight timeframes and mastering wiring techniques for the electronic components. Despite setbacks, including a personal injury and logistical hurdles, Eduardo demonstrated resilience and adaptability, ultimately achieving success.
Through the process, Eduardo gained invaluable woodworking and engineering skills, particularly in wiring and assembling complex machinery, stating, "I feel like just the engineering part of the process helped me a lot about the understanding, such as the wiring, the electronic part, and the building skills that I got from it." Looking forward, Eduardo plans to apply his newfound expertise in future endeavors, including college tennis, while also inspiring others to pursue their passions and overcome challenges.
